What to Expect When Visiting Barreirinhas, State of Maranhao, Brazil

Itinerary
Day 1: São Luís / Barreirinhas / Atins
Stop At: Barreirinhas, Barreirinhas, State of Maranhao
Departure in the morning between 6:50 am and 7:30 am to Barreirinhas (260 km of paved road – average journey time is 4 am), stop on the way for a regional breakfast or snack (not included). Reception in Barreirinhas with instructions for the itinerary at Caetés Expedições headquarters. Then lunch (not included) in local self-service or in Vassouras (to be confirmed on the day of arrival, due to travel time), boarding a speedboat to Atins, descending the Rio Preguiças (01h trip). During the tour we will make stops in Vassouras, Caburé (Pequenos Lençóis Maranhenses) and Mandacaru.

Stop At: Atins, Atins, Barreirinhas, State of Maranhao
Disembark at Atins port and transfer to Pousada. Rest of the day at leisure. Overnight in Atins with breakfast.
OBS I: The São Luís / Barreirinhas transfer schedule is informed the day before departure due to the closing of the route, we always leave around 06.50 am to 07.30 am.
OBS II: Inform the accommodation location so that the transfer between São Luís / Barreirinhas can be arranged;
OBS III: We recommend that you take a small amount of luggage, as the journey will be done entirely on foot, the larger luggage will continue on the minibus / Van and will be kept at Caetés Expedições, where they will be delivered on arrival at Santo Amaro. We suggest to bring a small backpack of maximum 20l or 30l
– Any extra luggage is not the responsibility of transporting the guide, it is not obliged to take backpacks from customers.
– We have mules owned by the natives of the Park who charge a daily fee of R $ 350.00 (which can be divided between the participants of the trekking by mutual agreement), each mule carries a maximum weight of 60kg.

Day 2: Day – Atins / Rio Negro / Baixa Grande
Stop At: Rio Negro, Rio Negro, State of Parana
After breakfast departure at 6am (or according to the tide table) for the beginning of the adventure. Board a 4×4 vehicle to the mouth of the Rio Negro (20km in a 4×4 car along the coast). Upon arriving at Foz do Rio we will start the first hike, about 8km through the dunes (approx. 04hs) until reaching Baixa Grande.

Stop At: Baixa Grande, Baixa Grande, State of Bahia
One of the Oasis of the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park. Throughout the tour, we will contemplate the most isolated lagoons in the Park. At the stops, the important thing is to cool off and use sunscreen. In the beginning of the day, dry fruits, nuts and cereal bars will be distributed to replenish your energy during the walk. In Baixa Grande after accommodation, lunch and regional dinner (not included) based on free-range chicken, goat or fish – there are also options for vegans and vegetarians.
At the end of the day we will be able to watch the sunset on a Dune very close to the Redário.
NOTE I: A hammock and sheet are available in the hammock for each client. The night is spent in a straw shack that welcomes not only our groups, but also other local agencies;
NOTE II: The oasis has a single bathroom for all customers with a shower (no hot water);
NOTE III: cash (R $) is required, as credit cards or checks are not accepted. The average value is R $ 40.00 per person / meal.

Day 3: Day – Baixa Grande / Queimada dos Britos
Stop At: Lencois Maranhenses National Park, Lencois Maranhenses National Park, State of Maranhao
After breakfast at 6am (or to be arranged with the guide), we will continue our adventure. On this day we will do a 09km hike (approx. 05hs). Throughout the route we will contemplate the best lagoons in the Park, at the stops the important thing is to cool off and use sunscreen, in the beginning of the day dry fruits, nuts and cereal bar will be distributed to recover the energy during the walk.

Stop At: Queimada dos Britos, Santo Amaro do Maranhão – State of Maranhão, 65195-000, Brazil
In Queimada dos Britos we settled down and took the opportunity to get to know the town and its characters, this other Oasis in the “middle” of the National Park has been the stage for filming such as Casa de Areia and many National and International reports. Regional lunch and dinner (not included) based on free-range chicken, goat or fish – there are also options for vegans and vegetarians prepared by Oasis residents. Free night to live with the locals. Overnight in Redário at Oásis Queimada dos Britos.

Day 4: Queimada dos Britos / Betânia / Santo Amaro
Stop At: Betania, Betania, State of Pernambuco
After breakfast departing at 4am (or to be arranged with the guide), we will leave Queimada dos Britos to continue walking to Betânia (17km – approx. 7am) with arrival scheduled at 11am. At the stops, the important thing is to cool off, at the beginning of the day, dry fruits, nuts and cereal bars will be distributed to replenish your energy during the walk. This stretch is best known for the largest lagoons in the Park. Arrival in Betânia and stop for lunch (not included) at Restaurante da Dona Chagas. After rest, transfer to Santo Amaro, the final point of the hike. Rest of the day at leisure to explore the peaceful city. Overnight in Santo Amaro with breakfast.

Day 5: Day – Santo Amaro / São Luís
Stop At: Sao Luis, Sao Luis, State of Maranhao
At 8 am departure from Santo Amaro to MA 402 (36 km, 40 min, dirt and asphalt road). Vehicle change and boarding between 9 am and 9:30 am in a private vehicle bound for São Luís (200 km, 3 am, asphalt). Arrival around 12 pm in São Luís.
NOTE: Always inform the place of accommodation so that the Santo Amaro / São Luís transfer can be arranged.
