It is a Catholic church located in the Historic Center of Porto Alegre. It is the oldest church in the city still standing. Former Majestic Hotel, it is a historic building and a cultural center of the Capital, one of the largest and best equipped in Brazil.

The Majestic Hotel had its peak in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. During this period, guests with great names from politics, such as ex-presidents Getúlio Vargas and João Goulart, and from the artistic world, such as Vicente Celestino, Virginia Lane and Francisco Alves. As a result of the so-called “developmentalist” period, the hotel began to suffer competition from new hotels that had wider and more modern facilities. The former guests were gradually replaced by “cath” and wrestling fighters, as well as singles, widowers, bohemians and lonely poets like Mário Quintana, who stayed there from 1968 to 1980, in apartment 217. It is located in the Praia de Belas neighborhood, is bypassed by the avenues Borges de Medeiros and Ipiranga, being cut by the avenue Edvaldo Pereira Paiva (also called Beira-Rio), which overlooks the Guaíba waterfront. The park was designed on the old embankment that enabled the expansion of Praia de Belas, completed in the 1960s.
