After the expulsion of the French from Rio de Janeiro in 1567, and during the period when Brazil was a colony of Portugal, it received the denominations of Battery of Our Lady of Guide and, later, Fortress of Santa Cruz da Barra (1612), constituting an integral part of the system of defense of the entrance of the bay of Guanabara.
